Free ICBC Practice Test

The ICBC Knowledge Test is required to obtain your British Columbia Class 7 learner's licence (the 'L') as the first stage of the Graduated Licensing Program. Understanding the format and passing requirements helps ensure a smooth testing experience:

• The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 40 correct (80%) to pass.
• You have 45 minutes to complete the test — about 54 seconds per question on average.
• You can get your L on or after your 16th birthday.
• Questions cover eight main topic areas: road signs, rules of the road, speed limits, intersections, parking, sharing the road, highway driving, and alcohol/drugs.
• Road signs make up a notably large share of the test — roughly a quarter to a third of all questions — making sign study especially high-value.
• The test costs a fee per attempt and can be retaken as many times as needed, administered at any ICBC driver licensing office in BC.

Once you answer 40 questions correctly, the test immediately concludes with a pass. If you reach 11 incorrect answers, the test ends; however, you can skip difficult questions during the test on the touchscreen computer and return to them at the end.

With 50 questions in 45 minutes, most candidates have enough time if they don't get stuck — but freezing on a few tough questions can create real time pressure toward the end. Practicing at a steady pace (not just for accuracy) is worth building deliberately. On the official ICBC computer test, you can skip questions you are unsure about and return to them once you have completed the rest of the test.
