M1 Knowledge Test Format
The M1 knowledge exam is the mandatory first step in Ontario's graduated licensing system for motorcycle riders. Understanding the test format, passing requirements, and licence conditions helps you prepare effectively for test day:
- The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 80% correct to pass.
- You must be at least 16 years old and pass a vision screening to take the test.

- After holding an M1 licence for a minimum period (commonly around 60 days with training, longer without), riders can progress to the M2 stage.
Your M1 licence is valid for 90 days. If you do not pass your M1 exit road test or complete an approved motorcycle safety course to obtain your M2 licence within 90 days, you must re-take the written knowledge test.
