How the Matrigma Test Works

Developed by Swedish psychometric publisher Assessio (now owned by Hogan), the Matrigma assessment evaluates your capacity to identify complex logical sequences, solve unfamiliar problems, and reason abstractly without relying on language, cultural background, or specialized mathematical training.

  • Each question presents a 3x3 grid where 8 cells follow a consistent logical pattern (across rows, columns, and sometimes diagonals) and one cell is missing.
  • Test-takers choose the correct missing piece from typically 6 multiple-choice answer options.
  • Patterns can involve changes in shape, size, rotation, shading, position, number of elements, or combinations of these across the grid.
  • Two common formats exist: the "Classic" version (longer, more questions) and the "Adaptive" version (shorter, roughly 12 minutes, question difficulty adjusts based on performance).

Predictable cycling of internal shading properties (solid dark, crosshatch, diagonal stripe, transparent/empty) or Latin Square distributions where each shape/attribute appears exactly once per row and column.

Matrigma scores are delivered on a standardized 0–10 stanine scale. A score of 4–6 represents the 50th percentile (average candidate norm), while scores of 7 and above place you in the top 20% to 5% of candidates. For high-demand corporate and leadership roles, employers often target a stanine score of 7 or higher.

Why Matrigma Feels Different From Other Assessments

Unlike knowledge-based exams, there's no content to memorize — success comes from practiced pattern recognition and comfort working quickly under time pressure, which is a learnable skill through repeated exposure to matrix-style reasoning problems.
