Important Format Update: PAX Has Been Replaced by NEX

If you're using older PAX-specific study materials, be aware the NLN officially replaced the PAX exam with the NLN Nursing Entrance Exam (NEX) in 2025. The NEX covers similar core skill areas (Verbal, Math, and Science) but reflects an updated exam design. NLN NEX Exam Format

The National League for Nursing designed the NEX as a comprehensive, computer-based admissions test divided into three independently timed sections:

  • The exam consists of three 60-minute sections: Verbal Ability, Mathematics, and Science — all questions are multiple-choice with four answer options, and the exam is computer-based.
  • Verbal Ability covers reading comprehension (based on passages containing scientific and general vocabulary) and word knowledge/vocabulary.
  • Mathematics covers basic calculations, word problems, algebra, fractions, decimals, percentages, and data interpretation from charts.
  • Science covers biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science relevant to nursing education foundations, including human anatomy basics.
  • Each nursing program sets its own minimum passing/acceptance score — there's no single universal passing threshold, so confirm your specific target program's requirement.
  • Candidates need a high school diploma or GED equivalent to be eligible, and the exam is typically completed at a proctored testing location, often the nursing school itself.
