How ACCUPLACER Works
ACCUPLACER is a suite of computerized tests developed by the College Board to evaluate your academic readiness in reading, writing, and mathematics so college advisors can place you into appropriate courses.
- The test is computer-adaptive: question difficulty adjusts in real time based on how you answer, so no two test-takers see the exact same set of questions.
- It is untimed, typically taking 90–120 minutes total depending on which sections your college requires.
- There is no passing or failing score — results are used only to place you into appropriate coursework, with individual colleges setting their own cut scores for specific classes.
- Most colleges only require certain sections, not all of them — confirm with your school's advising or testing office which specific ACCUPLACER sections you'll be taking.
Because question difficulty adjusts based on your performance, taking your time on early questions helps the adaptive algorithm establish an accurate, higher skill level.
ACCUPLACER Test Sections
Reading
Comprehension of passages, identifying main ideas, making inferences, understanding relationships between ideas, and determining word meaning in context.
Writing
Revising and editing multi-paragraph texts for organization, development, sentence structure, grammar, usage, and punctuation.
Arithmetic
Computation and practical problem-solving with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS)
A step up from Arithmetic, covering algebraic reasoning, linear equations, basic statistics, and probability.
Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF)
The most advanced math section, covering quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions for students likely to place into higher-level math courses.
WritePlacer
An essay-based writing assessment (not multiple choice) evaluating focus, organization, development, and sentence structure.
Why Practicing Still Matters on an Untimed, No-Fail Test
Even though ACCUPLACER is untimed and uses no pass/fail scoring, a stronger performance can place you directly into credit-bearing college courses instead of non-credit developmental or remedial coursework. Placing into remedial classes means spending extra semesters and tuition dollars on prerequisite courses that do not count toward your degree requirements.
