EQAO assessments measure how Ontario students are progressing in reading, writing, and math against the provincial curriculum. They're administered in Grades 3, 6, and 9, plus a separate literacy requirement in Grade 10. These free practice questions help your child get comfortable with both the content and the digital test format before assessment day.
What EQAO Actually Measures (and How Much It 'Counts')
EQAO assessments are standardized provincial evaluations administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office to measure student achievement against Ontario Curriculum expectations. Understanding what each assessment measures — and how the results are used — helps parents and students keep preparation in healthy, constructive perspective.
- Grade 3 and Grade 6 (Primary and Junior Divisions): EQAO is a low-stakes diagnostic assessment. It does not appear on your child's provincial report card, does not impact report card grades, and has no effect on academic placement or course streaming.
- Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics: In most Ontario school boards, the Grade 9 EQAO math assessment counts toward a percentage of the student's final Grade 9 math course mark (typically between 5% and 10%, as determined by the local school board or teacher), making preparation especially meaningful at this level.
- Grade 10 OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test): The OSSLT is a mandatory graduation requirement needed to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), separate from the Grades 3, 6, and 9 assessments.
- Digital E-Assessment Platform: All EQAO assessments are administered fully online through an e-assessment interface featuring interactive question types (drag-and-drop, dropdown choice menus, multiple-choice) and digital tools such as text-to-speech, zoom, on-screen calculators, and formula reference sheets.

What's Covered at Each Grade Level
Grade 3 (Primary Division)
Reading comprehension of narrative and informational texts, writing tasks evaluating idea organization and sentence structure, and math number sense (addition, subtraction, and basic fractions), patterns, and spatial sense.
Grade 6 (Junior Division)
More advanced reading comprehension and inference, structured writing tasks, and mathematics covering number sense, fractions, decimals, basic geometry, measurement, and early algebraic thinking.
Grade 9 (Assessment of Mathematics)
De-streamed Grade 9 Ontario mathematics curriculum (MTH1W), including algebraic expressions, linear relations and graphing, proportional reasoning, financial literacy, and multi-step problem-solving in the digital format.
Grade 10 (OSSLT Literacy Requirement)
A literacy-focused graduation requirement testing reading comprehension across informational, narrative, and graphic texts, along with structured writing tasks to demonstrate high school literacy proficiency.
Why Practicing the Digital Format Matters
Because EQAO assessments use an unfamiliar on-screen interface — with drag-and-drop matching, dropdown selection menus, and digital tools like on-screen calculators — that looks and feels different from everyday classroom paperwork, even a strong student can feel thrown off by the format alone. Practicing on a computer or tablet removes that surprise factor in advance, so your child can approach test day feeling confident and focused on the questions themselves.

Grade 3 Practice Questions (Primary Division)
Designed for 8–9 year old students. Practice questions feature gentle, reassuring language and step-by-step guidance to help your child get comfortable with short reading passages and foundational number sense.

Grade 6 Practice Questions (Junior Division)
Designed for 11–12 year old students. Practice questions cover reading inferences from multi-paragraph informational texts, fractional reasoning, and geometric calculations.

How to Prepare for the EQAO Exam
Practice on a Computer or Tablet
Because EQAO is fully digital, encourage your child to practice on a desktop or laptop with a mouse and keyboard. Getting comfortable with dropdown menus, typing short responses, and using the on-screen calculator eliminates technology surprises on assessment day.
Keep Practice Sessions Short and Low-Pressure
For Grade 3 and 6 students, keep practice intervals to 15–20 minutes. Treat these sessions as friendly learning puzzles rather than intense tests, and emphasize effort, problem-solving strategies, and perseverance over getting every question right immediately.
Focus Extra Preparation on Grade 9 Math
Unlike elementary assessments, the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics often counts toward a percentage (typically 5%–10%) of your student's final course grade. Allocate extra review time to linear relations, algebraic equations, and multi-step word problems.
