Digital SAT Prep — Reading & Writing and Math

Last updated: September 2026

The Digital SAT is the College Board's college admissions exam, taken through the Bluebook app. It's shorter and more adaptive than the old paper SAT — 98 questions across two sections in about 2 hours and 14 minutes, with your performance on the first module of each section shaping the difficulty of the second. Use these free practice questions to sharpen your skills before test day.

How the Digital SAT Works

The Digital SAT is administered entirely via the College Board's Bluebook application on personal or school-managed digital devices. The exam is divided into two major sections, each split into two equal-length timed modules with a 10-minute break between sections.

  • Two main sections: Reading and Writing, then Math — each split into two timed modules (4 modules total), with a 10-minute break between sections.
  • Reading and Writing: 54 questions total (27 per module) in 64 minutes, covering information and ideas, craft and structure, expression of ideas, and standard English conventions through short passages.
  • Math: 44 questions total (22 per module) in 70 minutes, covering algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry/trigonometry — a calculator (including the built-in Desmos tool) is permitted throughout.
  • Module-adaptive design: Module 1 of each section presents a fixed mix of easy, medium, and hard questions to every test-taker; how you perform on Module 1 determines whether Module 2 skews harder or easier — which directly affects your maximum possible score.
  • Scoring: each section is scored 200–800, combining for a total score of 400–1600. There is no penalty for guessing, so every question should be answered.
  • A few questions in each section are unscored experimental/pretest questions used by the College Board for future exams — since you can't identify which ones, treat every question as if it counts.

Total testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes (plus a 10-minute scheduled intermission between the Reading & Writing and Math sections).

Digital SAT Section Breakdown & Content Domains

01

Reading and Writing: Craft and Structure

Analyzing high-utility vocabulary in context, evaluating text structure and rhetorical purpose, and assessing cross-text connections across short humanities, literature, and science passages.

02

Reading and Writing: Information and Ideas

Locating central ideas, interpreting supporting details, evaluating textual and quantitative evidence from tables and charts, and drawing logically sound inferences.

03

Reading and Writing: Standard English Conventions & Expression

Editing sentences for grammatical agreement, punctuation boundaries, clauses, modifiers, and synthesizing bulleted research notes to achieve specific rhetorical goals.

04

Math: Algebra & Advanced Math

Linear equations and inequalities, systems of two linear equations, quadratic and nonlinear equations, polynomial operations, exponential functions, and radical expressions.

05

Math: Problem-Solving and Data Analysis

Ratios, rates, proportional relationships, unit conversions, percentages, two-way tables, probability, and evaluating statistical sample distributions and margins of error.

06

Math: Geometry and Trigonometry

Area and volume formulas, lines, angles, right-triangle trigonometry, unit circle radians, arc length, circle equations in the xy-plane, and geometric proof relationships.

The SAT has no pass or fail mark. Scaled scores range from 400 to 1600 overall (200–800 per section). The built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available on all 44 Math questions.

Why the Adaptive Format Changes Your Strategy

Because Module 2 difficulty depends on Module 1 performance, and because harder modules unlock access to higher score ranges (up to 800 per section), treating the first module with full focus and accuracy matters even more than pacing evenly across a whole test the way older, non-adaptive tests required. Making careless mistakes on early questions can route you to the easier second module, capping your maximum possible section score regardless of how well you perform afterward.

Although the newly discovered deep-sea microbial community thrives in total darkness near hydrothermal vents, its metabolic processes are surprisingly ______ to those of surface bacteria that depend on sulfur oxidation for cellular energy. Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

Question 2 of 8

Biologist Dr. Elena Vance studied how artificial light at night disrupts nocturnal pollinators. In suburban field trials, flower patches illuminated by standard LED streetlights experienced a 62% decrease in moth visits compared to unlit control patches. However, when streetlights were fitted with narrow-spectrum red optical filters, moth visitation rebounded to 94% of baseline levels while maintaining adequate pedestrian visibility. Which finding from Dr. Vance's study best supports the claim that spectral filtering can mitigate the ecological damage of urban lighting?

While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes: • The Great Barrier Reef is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs spanning 2,300 kilometers. • In 1981, UNESCO designated the Great Barrier Reef as a World Heritage Site. • Mass coral bleaching events triggered by elevated sea temperatures occurred in 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2024. • Marine scientists utilize satellite thermal mapping and autonomous submersibles to survey coral bleaching. The student wants to emphasize the recurring frequency of climate-induced threats to the reef. Which choice most effectively uses the relevant information from the notes to accomplish this goal?

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for her pioneering research on chirped pulse amplification, physicist Donna Strickland became only the third woman in history to win the ______ her groundbreaking laser discoveries at the University of Rochester transformed optical science and laser surgery. Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

A regional courier company charges a flat pickup fee plus a constant hourly transit rate for express deliveries. For a delivery requiring 3 hours of transit, the total charge is $115. For a delivery requiring 7 hours of transit, the total charge is $235. What is the flat pickup fee charged by the courier company?

The quadratic function g is defined by g(x) = x² - 6x + k, where k is a constant. In the xy-plane, the graph of y = g(x) is tangent to the horizontal line y = -4 at exactly one point. What is the value of k?

Question 8 of 8

In the xy-plane, a circle with center (0, 0) has a radius of 10. Point P lies on the circle in the second quadrant such that the ray from the origin through P forms an angle θ with the positive x-axis. If cos(θ) = -0.6, what is the y-coordinate of point P?

How to Prepare for the SAT Exam

1

Practice Exclusively with Digital and Adaptive Resources

The Digital SAT differs fundamentally from older paper versions in passage length, question pacing, and module adaptivity. Avoid studying from legacy paper SAT books and practice directly with digital interfaces and official Bluebook practice tests.

2

Master the On-Screen Desmos Graphing Calculator

The Desmos calculator is available on every single Math question on the Digital SAT. Learn keyboard shortcuts, regression modeling, inequality graphing, and table lookups to solve complex nonlinear and systems questions in seconds.

3

Prioritize Precision and Accuracy on Module 1

Your Module 1 performance dictates whether you unlock the higher-difficulty Module 2, which is required to access top-tier scores up to 800. Take your time and double-check early questions to ensure you do not cap your score ceiling.

4

Use Process of Elimination on Tough Questions

There is zero penalty for wrong guesses on the SAT. If you encounter an unfamiliar concept, rule out demonstrably false distractors, select your best remaining guess, flag the question, and review it if extra time remains.

5

Build Digital Stamina with Full-Length Timed Simulations

Sitting for 2 hours and 14 minutes in front of a screen requires focused cognitive endurance. Simulate realistic exam conditions with timed practice tests to manage screen fatigue and the 10-minute break transition effectively.
