National Benchmark Test Prep — AQL & Mathematics

Last updated: September 2026

The NBT is a South African university admissions assessment measuring academic readiness, not curriculum knowledge. Every applicant writes the AQL (Academic and Quantitative Literacy) test, while some programs also require the MAT (Mathematics) test. Use these free practice questions to prepare for both components.

NBT Exam Format

The National Benchmark Test is structured into two separate, standardized testing sessions depending on university programme requirements:

  • AQL is typically written as a combined 3-hour session covering Academic Literacy (AL) and Quantitative Literacy (QL) together — all applicants write this regardless of intended program.
  • MAT is a separate 3-hour session with no internal time divisions, required only for programs like Engineering, Health Sciences, and Commerce that need strong mathematics preparation.
  • The NBT does not release official past papers, so quality practice materials that reflect the actual skill areas tested are especially valuable for preparation.
  • Results are reported across three benchmark levels: proficient (well-prepared for university study), intermediate (may benefit from additional academic support), and basic (extensive support or a foundation programme may be needed).
  • Universities use NBT results alongside matric results for admission decisions, placement into extended curriculum programmes, and identifying students who may need additional support — it isn't simply pass/fail.
  • If you miss your scheduled test date, you must re-register and pay again, and scores are only released once payment is confirmed.

Both test sessions are strictly timed multiple-choice assessments designed to evaluate higher-order reasoning, analytical reading, quantitative interpretation, and mathematical problem-solving.

What Each NBT Section Actually Tests

01

Academic Literacy (AL)

Understanding and critically engaging with academic texts, evaluating whether claims are adequately supported by evidence, and academic vocabulary and argument structure.

02

Quantitative Literacy (QL)

Interpreting data from graphs, tables, and charts, and applying numerical reasoning to real-world academic and everyday contexts.

03

Mathematics (MAT)

Algebra, functions, trigonometry, and geometry at National Senior Certificate level, applied in ways that test deeper understanding rather than memorized procedures.

Results are categorized into Basic, Intermediate (Lower/Upper), and Proficient benchmark bands used by South African universities for placement and admission.

Why NBT Questions Feel Different From Matric Exams

Because the NBT tests underlying academic skills rather than curriculum content, familiar matric-style questions won't always prepare you — the test often presents unfamiliar contexts specifically to see whether you can apply reasoning skills to new situations, which is a different kind of practice than reviewing matric syllabus content.

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows: 'Over the past decade, off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grids have expanded rapidly across rural sub-Saharan Africa. Proponents argue that decentralized solar power fundamentally eliminates rural poverty and immediately sparks broad-based economic industrialization. However, a recent five-year multi-country longitudinal study by development economists found that while household lighting and mobile phone charging reliability improved for 92% of connected households, small enterprise revenue and industrial manufacturing activity only increased in villages that simultaneously received paved access roads, municipal water infrastructure, and subsidized microfinance credit lines.' Which of the following statements most accurately evaluates the author's argument regarding the relationship between rural solar mini-grids and local economic industrialization?

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows: 'The Cape Floristic Region of South Africa boasts exceptional floral biodiversity, containing over 9,000 vascular plant species, of which nearly 70% are endemic fynbos. Conservation biologists emphasize that controlled, periodic fire regimes (occurring every 10 to 15 years) are ecologically essential for fynbos seed germination, nutrient cycling, and the suppression of invasive Australian Acacia species. Recently, a commercial forestry lobby claimed that complete suppression of all wildfire across the fynbos biome is vital to protect municipal water catchments and promote maximum native plant species richness.' Which of the following best assesses the forestry lobby's claim in light of the biological evidence presented in the passage?

The table below summarizes the student enrollment and total annual government subsidy allocation for four regional university campuses in South Africa for 2025: • Campus A: 12,000 students | R216,000,000 Total Subsidy • Campus B: 18,000 students | R270,000,000 Total Subsidy • Campus C: 8,000 students | R160,000,000 Total Subsidy • Campus D: 25,000 students | R350,000,000 Total Subsidy Which campus received the highest government subsidy per enrolled student, and by how much did its per-student subsidy exceed that of Campus B?

Question 4 of 8
Interactive Practice

A municipal water reservoir in the Western Cape has a total capacity of 400 megalitres (ML). At the start of a dry season (Day 0), the reservoir is at 80% capacity (320 ML). Over the next 50 days, water is withdrawn for domestic consumption at a constant rate of 3.5 ML per day, while continuous river inflow averages 1.5 ML per day, and net surface evaporation accounts for an average loss of 0.5 ML per day. If no rainfall occurs during this period, what will the reservoir's volume be at the end of Day 50, expressed as a percentage of its total 400 ML capacity?

Question 5 of 8
Interactive Practice

Solve for x in the following exponential equation: 2^(2x + 1) - 9 · 2^x + 4 = 0 Which of the following represents the complete real solution set for x?

Question 6 of 8
Interactive Practice

Given the quadratic function f(x) = -x^2 + 6x - 5 and the linear function g(x) = 2x - 1: Determine the coordinates of the turning point (vertex) of the parabola f(x), and find the x-coordinate(s) where the graph of f(x) intersects the line g(x).

Question 7 of 8
Interactive Practice

Determine the general solution for θ in the trigonometric equation: 2 sin^2(θ) + cos(θ) - 1 = 0, where k ∈ ℤ.

Question 8 of 8
Interactive Practice

In the Cartesian plane, circle C is defined by the equation (x - 3)^2 + (y + 2)^2 = 25. A tangent line is drawn to circle C at point P(7, 1), which lies on the circumference. What is the equation of this tangent line?

How to Prepare for the NBT

1

Practice Under Real 3-Hour Timed Conditions

Both AQL and MAT are strictly timed 3-hour sessions with no internal pauses. Completing practice sets in one seated block builds the cognitive stamina required to maintain analytical precision through the final hour.

2

Read Academic Literacy Passages Once and Target Specific Evidence

Read Academic Literacy passages once at full speed to grasp the core thesis and argumentative flow, then scan back directly to referenced paragraphs for evidence questions rather than re-reading from the start for every question.

3

Scrutinize Quantitative Literacy Axis Labels and Units

Read axis labels and units carefully on every Quantitative Literacy graph and chart. Misreading scale increments or confusing absolute numbers with percentages is one of the most common test-taker traps.

4

Show All Working on Mathematics Problems

Show all working on Mathematics questions even in practice so you can identify exactly where mistakes happen — whether in algebraic manipulation, trigonometric reduction, or geometric reasoning.

5

Categorize Errors After Every Practice Session

Categorize errors after each practice session as either a conceptual gap, a careless mistake, or a misread question to focus your remaining study time effectively on your highest-yield improvement areas.
